A Specialist Bariatric (weight loss surgery) dietitian and emotional eating coach, based in the West Midlands. With more than 30 years experience as a dietitian and NHS Specialist in the West Midlands.
As my work is virtual I work with clients locally, nationally and internationally to help them achieve long lasting lifestyle changes.
In 2019 I created The Dietologist because I wanted to provide nutrition and mindset coaching to help you achieve the weight loss results that you want, and deserve. WEEK ONE: FOUNDATIONS TO YOUR WLS:
This week I help you understand how your WLS tool works, the do's and don'ts of WLS, including hunger levels, and how to map out your weight loss journey to help set realistic weight goals.
WEEK TWO: HOW TO EAT FOR YOUR SURGERY:
Includes the post op healing phase of the diet with step by step guides with recipes & meal plans. A Diet reset to get you back on track if you're experiencing weight regain or hit a weight stall/plateau.
Talk about MACROs, protein goals, fluid guidelines, using the bariatric plate method instead of counting calories to help you lose weight.
WEEK THREE: Working with your surgery
We discuss the importance of eating techniques, how to put them into practice, dumping syndrome, prepping and planning your meals, pantry and fridge/freezer storage ideas, how frequently you should be eating after WLS to meet your needs.
WEEK FOUR: Your relationship with food:
We cover real hunger v emotional hunger, triggers to emotional eating, the hunger and fullness scale and food and mood. You'll begin to identify your triggers emotional hunger and start tp understand why you do what you do.
WEEK FIVE: Trashing the triggers to emotional eating
How to manage your triggers to emotional eating when you seek comfort, feel lonely, stressed, bored and so much more. Eating in response to our social environment and childhood influences. How stress and cortisol affects weight loss and cravings.
WEEK 6: Dieting cycle and cravings
Living with food restriction and bingeing, good and bad foods, the all or nothing mindset, black and white thinking and how this sabotages your weight loss. We begin dig deep into your mindset this week.
Week 7: Creating balance:
We start to create your new way of eating to help banish the old habits. We explore mindfulness, a SECRET rule for food, exercise and life to help create balance, and help manage your relationship with the weighing scales.
Week 8: The Right mindset
We dig deep into improving your relationship with yourself, self esteem, imposter syndrome and changing the inner critic to become your best self. This is the inner work that is needed to keep the weight off for good!
Develop the foundations to understand your weight loss surgery journey
You will understand how your surgery works, so you understand how to use your weight loss surgery tool for maximum results. You'll have a clearer idea about how much you want to lose and how long it will take to achieve your weight and health goals.
Understand how to eat for your weight loss surgery
By the end of week 2 you'll fully understand how to eat and balance your macros at whatever point you are in your weight loss transformation. You'll appreciate where your calories come from really does matter and how this the wrong food group can cause a hormonal shift which can lead to weight gain rather than a loss.
Learn how to work with your surgery
Understand how to get the best results from the surgery by using the evidence-based eating techniques and correct food textures to help with fullness levels. You’ll learn about when it’s safe to drink fluids and understand why it’s important to follow this advice to ensure optimum weight loss results. We will also examine dumping syndrome and what you need to do, to reduce the risk of dumping and how to manage it if you do.
Examine your relationship with food
Understand the difference between real v emotional hunger and how surgery can only help with real hunger. You'll examine your traits of emotional eating, understand hunger and fullness levels and learn how to use the hunger scale to help you gain control of your eating to ensure you don’t overeat.
Trash your triggers to emotional eating
You'll learn how to use your food and mood diary to examine the psychology of why you eat when you’re not physically hungry, identifying triggers in your eating habits and patterns in a way that you’ve never looked at before. You’re now beginning to trust your hunger and fullness cues, helping you to work with your WLS.
UNDERSTAND WHY YOU BINGE & CRAVE FOODS
You’ll understand why you crave certain food and how you may have given your permission to eat to a diet/meal plan and why “dieting” doesn’t serve you anymore, along with understanding your mindset with regards to losing weight. You will begin to journal your thoughts and feelings about your weight from childhood and start to connect with your eating habits and inner child.
Build the RIGHT positive mindset to help empower you to achieve your weight loss goals
You'll be managing imposter syndrome and the inner critic that keeps telling you, you can’t lose the weight because you’ve failed so many times before. You can now create the right positive mindset and your new reality. You’ll learn the power of gratitude and affirmations to help empower you to become the NEW YOU! This is the inner work I've done (and continue to practice everyday) to transform my life and I know you can do it too.
Create balance in WHAT YOU EAT & HOW YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE

Where do I start with this five star review.
I don’t even know how to explain after meeting Van for the first time changed my mind set on the way I looked at life and of course food. She set weekly/monthly goals nothing was too much trouble she was there at every bad week or even better the good weeks.

I had private bariatric surgery to remove a gastric band revising to a gastric bypass. The poor eating habits I had developed from the band were inhibiting my weight loss. Working with Van 1-2-1, educated me to work with the bypass viewing it as a tool, not the cure.
Van built me up emotionally and intellectually, highlighting the stressors with work and life that were preventing my weight loss. Having Van to talk through this with me was such a lift, it generated great awareness.
On reflection, I wish I found Van pre-operative so I could have been fully educated and manage my expectations with secondary weight loss surgery. Her knowledge is inspiring, when the scales stand still, I accept it and that is because of Van.

What is bariatric aftercare and why do I need it?
Bariatric / Weight Loss surgery aftercare is the support that you need to help make the changes for long term weight loss. Without this you're likely to regain the weight you lose after a few years. 50% of patients regain ALL the weight they lose due to lack of aftercare support.
I like to use the analogy of a house when discussing WLS aftercare/support:
“We need to get the foundations right before we start to build and decorate our homes, otherwise the cracks keep appearing.”
The inner work you do before and after any bariatric procedure is the most critical part, and at The Dietologist I want to help prepare you for surgery and support you through the process post-surgery (aftercare).
Won’t I just lose weight automatically after having my surgery?
WLS surgery is a tool and does approximately 30% of the work controlling real hunger. WLS doesn’t control emotional eating or change your thoughts and feelings about food or yourself. After working in the industry for many years, most women I’ve worked with struggle to change their thoughts and feelings around food. They believe the surgery or a diet will “FIX” them, but there are usually deeper issues which they have not dealt with!
Can’t I just put a meal plan together or go on a diet and get the same results?
Meal plans are very general and I like to manage my clients as real people. Diets and meal plans can create a restrictive mindset where food cravings can result in a cycle of bingeing and restricting. With the Dietologist 8 week Working With Your Surgery & Emotional Eating program I want to help you break free from the dieting mindset, move away from labelling foods as "good" and "bad" and create a better relationship with food, so you don’t have to worry about counting calories or following a general meal plan.
